Description
The Alloa Co-Operative Society Bowling Pavilion, designed by George Alexander Kerr of Kerr & McCulloch in 1925, is a 2-storey and attic sports pavilion with five bays, situated facing a bowling green. The building features open verandas on both the ground and first floors that connect the advanced end bays. It is rendered and painted, with a string course separating the ground and first floors on the east elevation, and painted projecting cills. The pavilion includes five-light segmental arched dormers and segmental arched openings with bowed cills on the gables. There is a later 20th-century addition attached to the north elevation.
On the east elevation, which is the principal facade, there are full-height three-light canted bay windows in the advanced end bays. The verandas have simple timber balustrades and tapered square timber columns with distinctive bracket capitals at the first-floor level. A two-leaf glazed and timber door is located centrally on the first floor.
The south elevation has a blocked opening at the ground floor. The west elevation features a full-height canted bay at the center with shallow-arched openings at the ground floor. The pavilion predominantly has multi-paned timber windows on the ground floor and multi-paned leaded windows on the first floor. The roof is non-original, with a pitched pantiled design and piended roofs on the advanced end bays, along with swept overhanging eaves and some cast-iron downpipes.
