Description
The Bowling Clubhouse in Melville Gardens, Montrose, was built in 1911 and is a single-storey pavilion with a roughly square plan located to the north of the bowling green. It features an open timber veranda on the south elevation, which is the principal façade. The building is rendered and has a narrow moulded cill course, with overhanging eaves and timber mullions.
The south elevation includes a two-step flight leading up to the veranda, which is supported by slender columns with square capitals and connected by a timber balustrade. The central entrance consists of a two-leaf glazed door topped by a four-pane fanlight, flanked by quadripartite windows.
On the east elevation, there is a six-light window to the left, with a window and door set back to the right. The north elevation features a canted bay at the center with two-leaf glazed doors and a 16-pane fanlight, accompanied by a window to the left and a door to the right. The west elevation has a six-light window to the right and two windows set back to the left.
The windows and doors have a single pane lower light and nine-pane upper lights. The roof is a grey slate gambrel style, adorned with terracotta ridge tiles and finials.
The pavilion and bowling greens are enclosed by wrought-iron hoop railings on a coped stone base, featuring fluted cast-iron corner posts. The entrance is marked by cast-iron gatepiers topped with studded balls.
