Description

Montrose Academy, located on Panmure Place in Montrose, was designed by David Logan in 1815, with a screen added in 1841. This is a two-storey, five-bay classical school building featuring single-storey side wings connected by Ionic columned screens. It is topped with a semi-elliptical gilded dome on a drum and constructed from sandstone ashlar, complete with a base course, frieze, cornice, and parapet.

The west elevation is symmetrical, showcasing an attached Ionic colonnade in antis on a four-step apron at the center, which forms the entrance and is flanked by single-bay end blocks. The central section includes three doorways with semicircular fanlights featuring fine radial glazing and two-leaf panelled doors. Above, nearly square windows are centered on the second floor. The parapet is dated 1815 and features paterae above the capitals. The drum and dome are set back, with circular windows containing radial glazing on the north and south sides, and a clock facing west on the drum. The elliptical dome rises to a smaller dome and finial. The end blocks have tall, consoled, and pedimented windows at ground level, with nearly square windows centered above on the first floor. The parapet is fluted and includes a raised panel with elaborate carved scrolls flanking and above. The flanking link screens consist of Ionic columns with pilaster antae, frieze, and cornice. The flanking wings contain three bays, with the center bay slightly recessed, and a parapet featuring a raised panel and scroll carvings at the center.

The north elevation shows a single bay end of the wing and a three-bay side of the main block, with modern additions to the left extending east. The south elevation mirrors this, with a single bay end of the wing and a three-bay side of the main block, along with modern additions to the right extending east.

The building features six and twelve-pane timber sash and case windows, and the roofs are covered with grey slate on shallow platforms and pitched sections.

Inside, the interior has largely been stripped and rebuilt, including the staircase, during the 1960 additions.

The boundary walls and gates consist of a low coped base that encloses the area between Academy Place, Panmure Place, and Russell Street. The gates feature decorative cast-iron finials on the link screens.
