Description
The Hope Paton Bowling Pavilion, dated 1904, is a single-storey timber boarded structure located at Mid Links in Montrose, facing the bowling green to the south. The pavilion features advanced single end bays that are connected by an open veranda and a gabled feature at the center above the veranda. It has a brick base with a painted chevron pattern on the timber boarding, a timber modillion eaves cornice, and timber mullions.
On the principal elevation, there is a two-step flight leading to a concrete veranda supported by columns with fluted capitals. The roof has a boarded soffit, and there is a timber balustrade with benches. The entrance consists of two-leaf glazed doors in the center, flanked by quadripartite windows that create a continuous glazing effect, with a panelled door to the right. The gabled feature has decorative barge boards, and the date and name of the club are painted on the gablehead.
The west elevation has canted ends with four windows in the center, two to the right, and the left side is boarded. The east elevation mirrors this with canted ends, four windows in the center, two to the left, and a door with a window to the right. The north elevation features weatherboarding at the rear, with a window at the extreme left and right, and a door with small flanking windows offset to the left.
Most windows have predominantly two-pane lower lights with six-pane upper lights. The roof is covered with grey slate and adorned with decorative terracotta ridge tiles and cast-iron finials at the ridge ends.
The pavilion is enclosed by wrought-iron hoop railings that form the boundary of the bowling green.
