Description

The Bowling Club Pavilion, located in the Stonehaven Recreation Grounds, is an early 20th-century timber sports pavilion. It is a single-storey building with a part raised basement, featuring a roughly rectangular plan and seven bays. The pavilion is situated on sloping ground that falls to the east and has a canted, polygonal-roofed bay at the center of the south (principal) elevation, along with an open veranda extending along the south and east elevations. The base course is rendered, while the upper part is vertically boarded timber. The doors are corniced, with panelled timber and glazed designs, and there are multi-paned fanlights above. The windows are framed with timber transoms and mullions. The veranda boasts a fretwork balustrade and paired timber supports with curved capitals, and the roof is gambrel-shaped, gabled at the north (rear) elevation.

The south elevation is symmetrical, featuring timber steps that lead up to a full-width veranda. The central canted bay projects outward, with a set-back face that includes a broad canted window and a door at the center. There are entrance doors flanking the central bay and tripartite windows at the end bays. To the outer left, there is a narrow projecting bay with a narrow window and a later timber ticket booth for support.

The north elevation displays a triple-gabled design with a mix of single and bipartite windows. The east elevation features a full-width veranda with a bipartite window at the center, along with a basement that has a timber boarded door in the center and a window to the left.

The pavilion's timber windows have multi-pane glazing patterns, and the roof is covered with grey slates and terracotta ridge tiles. The eaves overhang, complemented by plain bargeboarding, adds to the building's character.

Inside, as seen in 2004, the pavilion remains largely unaltered. The central room is panelled and features fluted pilasters. The locker rooms have boarded timber walls and ceilings, with fixed bench seats and lockers below, all accented by moulded cornices.
