Description
Belmont House, located on Belmont Brae in Stonehaven, dates from around 1820 and has been altered over time. This two-storey and attic, three-bay traditional house features a piend roof and is set within a large walled garden on sloping ground. It has a piended and slated bracketed canopy over the entrance door and a mutulated cornice on the dormer window. The exterior is made of roughly dressed sandstone ashlar with projecting cills.
The southeast elevation is symmetrical, with a flight of stone steps and flanking ironwork railings leading to the central bay at ground level. This bay contains a decoratively-astragalled part-glazed timber door and a three-pane fanlight, topped by a later canopy that is cantilevered on decorative timber brackets. Windows are located in the flanking bays, with regular fenestration close to the eaves on the first floor. Above, there is a large slate-hung, polygonal-roofed, canted dormer window, flanked by large solar heating panels. A large modern conservatory projects from the outer left side.
The northeast elevation features a regularly-fenestrated two-bay design with widely spaced bays and a tall wallhead stack at the center. There are later single-storey additions on the right side. The southwest elevation includes a piended later addition to the main house, which features French windows leading to the modern conservatory.
Most of the windows have replacement four-pane glazing in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are tall coped wallhead stacks with octagonal cans.
The boundary walls consist of coped, coursed rubble, heightened in some areas, with dressed ashlar quoins. There is a brick-coped section with a door leading to Ann Street. The property is marked by a pair of tall square-section, channelled ashlar gatepiers with cornices and large ball finials, along with decorative cast-iron garden railings located to the southeast of the house.
