Description
The War Memorial located at Mid Links in Montrose was designed by H S Gamley and John Kinross in 1920, with later contributions from H S Gamley and G W Browne in 1924, and an extension by William Lamb in 1947. This memorial features a lifesize bronze figure of Peace, depicted with wings, standing on a globe and holding an olive branch in its right hand. The figure is mounted on a large square pedestal made of white granite, which has a channelled design and a moulded base. Each side of the pedestal displays bronze panels that list the names of those who served, with the southern panel inscribed with "To the Glory of God and in sacred memory of those belonging to the Burgh of Montrose who gave their lives in a great cause 1914 - 1919." In 1947, the pedestal was placed on a podium consisting of three steps, flanked by wings to the east and west, each featuring two panels that commemorate the roll of honour for the Second World War from 1939 to 1945.
