Description
The War Memorial, made of Portland Stone, was erected in 1922 and designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield. It features a stepped plinth with added cast bronze panels that commemorate those who died in the Second World War. The main body of the monument is inscribed on all four sides with the names of 1,286 individuals who lost their lives in the First World War. At the top, there is a cornice and frieze adorned with tryglyphs and metopes, decorated with roundels. Above this is a podium that displays the town's coat of arms and wreaths. On the podium stands an 8-foot high bronze statue of 'Peace', sculpted by Sir William Hamo Thornycroft. The statue holds a myrtle branch aloft in her right hand and an angel with a wreath in her left hand.
