Description
Ochil House, built in 1806, is a former inn that has been converted into a county office. It is a two-storey building, with three storeys at the rear, featuring a rectangular plan and a plain classical style. In 1844, it became the county offices and courthouse, and in 1882, it served as the offices for the adjacent drill hall, which has since been demolished. The building underwent alterations by Colin Machin in 1993.
The principal (north) elevation is made of droved ashlar and includes a base course, cill course, moulded eaves course, and blocking course. The side elevations are constructed of squared and snecked rubble, while the rear elevation is rough rubble. The principal elevation features an advanced central entrance bay with a pediment that has a sculptured plough and a coped chimney stack at the top. Steps lead up to a deeply recessed entrance with a cavetto splayed doorway.
The windows are timber sash and case frames with a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is pitched and covered with grey slates, and it has wide corniced end stacks with short yellow clay cans.
To the west of the building is a boundary wall featuring a droved ashlar semi-elliptical arch, likely dating from the 1840s, which is topped by a stone inscribed '1st C & KRV Drill Hall 1882'. There is also an early 19th century rubble boundary wall beyond this arch.
The interior, as seen in July 2015, is primarily detailed in the 20th century, with rearranged interior walls, although the early 19th century U-plan stair at the rear remains intact.
