Description

The building, originally a workhouse, later used as a drill hall and a County Court, now comprises three houses. It dates from the 18th century and is constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The building is two storeys and nine bays wide, with the central three bays and the two end bays projecting and topped with pediments featuring modillion cornices and oculus windows. Sandstone quoins and a band between floors define the facade, which features a plinth. The windows are recessed 16-pane sashes with gauged brick arches above. Doorways are single cambered, with rectangular fanlights and six-panelled doors. The side elevation, facing Almoners, displays two late 18th-century cross casement windows with pintle hinges and diamond-leaded lights.
