Description

A pair of houses and a shop, located on South Street. No. 22 is dated 1722 above the door, though it is probably a 17th or earlier timber-framed building. The front of No. 22 is built with Flemish bond red brick, featuring grey brick headers. The side elevation is tile hung, resting on a sandstone plinth. The roof is half-hipped, covered in tiles, with a cruciform chimney stack. A brick band runs horizontally between the floors. No. 22 has two later casement windows on the ground floor, set beneath original cambered brick arches. The central doorcase features a swan's neck pediment, scrolls, the date 1722, brick pilasters, and a moulded wooden architrave. Inside, there is a 4-panelled door and an 18th-century iron handrail. No. 23 has two 16-pane sash windows with horns, and a central doorcase with a flat wooden hood on brackets; it features a 6-panelled door with the two upper panels cut away and glazed. A left-side 18th-century iron handrail is also present. A mid-19th-century addition extends from the left side of No. 23, constructed of brown brick with a tiled roof. This addition is a single storey and built with a gable end facing the street. It features a 32-pane sash shop front with a cornice above, a rectangular fanlight, and a 4-panelled door with fielded panels. A plinth is visible.
