Description
The drinking fountain at the corner of Clayton Road was built around 1901 and is a memorial to W.D. Stephen, who served as mayor and sheriff of Newcastle, and was known for promoting maritime commerce, temperance, and the welfare of the poor. The fountain was designed by architects Marshall and Tweedy, with sculptor W. Donaldson involved in its creation, and was funded by public subscription.
Constructed from sandstone ashlar and pink granite, the fountain features a bronze roundel and cast iron railings. It has a tall sandstone panel with a scrolled date panel set within a broken pediment, adorned with garlanded swags at the top and flanked by high obelisks on deeply-moulded plinths. Low flat-coped walls on either side are complemented by iron balustrades. Beneath the main panel, there is a granite basin that includes an inscription and a round plaque.
