Description

This is a terrace of eight houses built between 1976 and 1978 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as the site architect and structural engineering by White, Young and Partners. The main contractor was Shepherd Construction. The houses are constructed from red and buff metric modular brick on a timber frame, featuring red brick on the perimeter road and buff brick on the inner face facing Bolam Coyne. The design includes dark blue over cladding above the first floor on the Bolam Way elevation, with red vertical elements between the strip of first-floor windows. The roofs are monopitch metal supported by plywood box beam purlins, and the buildings are two storeys high. Number 1 is set apart from the others, separated by a carriageway with a timber link and a bird box. Numbers 2 and 3 have projecting porches with sloping metal roofs, and their ends are finished in blue weatherboarding. There is a dark blue bird box on the end wall of number 8. The houses feature timber windows with timber surrounds and aluminium opening lights, mostly sliding, along with timber doors that have glazed panels, many of which have been replaced with hardwood. The blue fences along Bolam Way for numbers 1 to 8 are an integral part of the overall design. Cushat Close serves as the perimeter wall between car and pedestrian spaces, showcasing the vibrant color palette used in the Bolam neighborhood.
