Description
The lychgate in front of St Lawrence's School, designed by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor with site architect Vernon Gracie, dates from 1833. It features a combination of cast iron and timber slats. The structure is supported by two metal uprights adorned with ornamental brackets that include six pointed stars and scrollwork. These uprights hold up a timber frame topped with a simple concave pitched roof made of wooden slats, characteristic of the Byker style. Notably, the metalwork used to support the roof is believed to have originated from a local Victorian railway station that was demolished during the Byker development.
