Description

1-15 with attached garden fences is a group of three-sided flats and houses built between 1976 and 1978 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with site architect Vernon Gracie and structural engineer White, Young and Partners. The buildings are constructed from red and buff metric modular brick on a timber frame, featuring dark blue and red weatherboarding. They have blue metal monopitch roofs supported by plywood box beam purlins.

Numbers 1 and 2 are flats, as are numbers 3 and 4, and the buildings are two storeys high. Numbers 1 and 2, and 3 and 4, are separated by a timber arch and include a dark blue bird box on the end. Number 8 also features a bird box. Numbers 9 to 15 display distinctive dark blue weatherboarding on the front, with green metal door hoods and original red doors for numbers 9 and 10. Some houses have prominent brick porches under sloping metal roofs. The timber windows include aluminium opening lights. A notable feature is the blue fences at the rear of numbers 9 to 15.

The use of stronger colours is a distinctive aspect of the Bolam area, where Erskine aimed to reflect the character of the surrounding wall area in this unusually flat section of the estate. The interiors have not been inspected.
