Description

Nos. 39-79 is a long terrace of houses and flats built between 1978 and 1979 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as the site architect and structural engineering by White, Young and Partners. The main contractor was Shepherd Construction. The buildings are made of pale brick metric modular brick on a timber frame, partially covered in weatherboarding, with low-pitched metal roofs supported by plywood box beam purlins. The flats are situated above open ground floors, known as stilt blocks, which are constructed from concrete block work and an in situ concrete frame, also clad in metric modular brickwork and brown weatherboarding, topped with blue metal roofs.

Nos. 39-47 Raby Street consists of three storeys featuring blue balconies, blue weatherboarding on the first floor, and white weatherboarding above second-floor strip windows. There are prominent projecting integral bin stores and sheds connected to the houses by timber catslide roofs made of blue timber with battening. The rear of the buildings has green windows and green weatherboarding. Nos. 49-53 are stilt block flats accessed from a gallery reached by stairs on the left, with brown balconies. Nos. 53-65 and Nos. 73-79 follow the same design as Nos. 39-47, while Nos. 67-71 replicate the style of Nos. 49-53. The windows are timber framed with aluminium opening lights, primarily sliding, and the doors are timber with glazed panels, some of which have been replaced with hardwood.
