Description

The Branch Library, opened on 8 June 1938, is located on Fenham Hall Drive in Newcastle upon Tyne. It is constructed of brick with an ashlar-coped plinth and an ashlar door surround, topped with a pantiled roof. The building has one high storey and features 11 symmetrical bays. The main entrance consists of a panelled double door with a fishscale overlight, all within a high, wide surround that includes an architrave and a recessed band above. The word "LIBRARY" is displayed in bronze letters above the door. The windows have metal glazing bars with fixed lights, central casements, and tiled brick sills, all recessed in panels with soldier-course lintels, set within a wide band of vertical courses. The hipped roof is finished with felt-covered parapet coping and has a central square ventilator.

Inside, the library showcases high-quality woodwork and levelled glass. The walls are lined with bookshelves featuring a fluted frieze. The vestibule has double doors on each side (with one blocked) and single doors leading to the issue desk, which is accompanied by a half-glazed screen. A window in the librarian's room on the left provides a view of the library, which is well-planned with radiating free-standing shelves and wall shelves, also adorned with a fluted frieze.
