Description
St Mary's Training College lecture room block is a teacher training college built in 1907 as a school by Leonard Stokes for the Sacred Heart Society. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brick with ashlar dressings, featuring a plinth and rusticated quoins, and has a graduated Lakeland slate roof. It is arranged in a U-shape around a courtyard and consists of two storeys and attics. Each front has three wide bays, along with wide angle pavilions that have large round bows facing outwards and taller, flanking towers. The main south front features sash windows with glazing bars arranged in groups of three and five, a deep cornice, and a parapet before a mansard roof with dormers. There are three tall front chimneys. The three-storey pavilions have rusticated quoins up to the second floor level and modillioned eaves cornices. The cornices are at the same level on the flanking towers, which have parapets of full storey height above. Full-height buttresses are present on the tower returns, and the return elevations are of a similar style.
