Description

The Temple of Antenociticus is a Roman temple located in Newcastle upon Tyne, dating from around 180 AD. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with an ashlar facing and has a small rectangular plan with a south apse. The walls of the temple stand approximately half a metre high, and there is a doorway in the east wall. Inside the apse, there is the base of a cult statue, although the head of the statue is now housed in the Museum of Antiquities at Barras Bridge, Newcastle. Flanking the apse are altars that are casts of the originals, which are also in the Museum. The temple is recognized as a scheduled ancient monument.
