Description
The Lodge to Victoria School for the Blind, built in 1865 by Alfred Waterhouse for Dr. Thomas Hodgkin, is a single-storey structure located on the south side of Benwell Lane in Newcastle upon Tyne. Constructed from hammer-dressed snecked sandstone, it features an ashlar plinth and dressings, along with a graduated dark slate roof that has stone gable copings. The building consists of one bay and includes a left porch.
A canted bay window with a hipped roof is present, topped by a pierced roundel in the gable peak. The windows have shouldered chamfers, while the porch contains a plain chamfered window. The left side of the porch features a shouldered surround for the door, which is situated under a gable. The roof is adorned with clove finials, although the one at the front is damaged. A tall chimney with a coped ridge and open top panels completes the design.
