Description
The Former Market Keeper's House, built around 1842 by John Dobson, is located on the south side of Scotswood Road in Newcastle upon Tyne. This building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof. It has a symmetrical design with bowed end projections and stands two storeys high with three bays.
The ground floor includes an arcade with keys and an impost string, which contains two inserted windows and a door. Above this, there is a sill string that supports two tripartite windows situated between long cornice brackets. The lower returns feature narrow, single-storey blank links to the bowed projections, which contain sash windows in plain reveals; the left end is obscured by an adjoining warehouse.
The low-pitched hipped roof is topped with a central two-stage clock tower, which has a clock under a pointed hood and an open-arched top stage with chimneys in the corner pilasters. The right bowed projection has a low half-conical roof, while the roof of the left projection is not visible.
