Description
Mossley Hill Hospital, originally a house built between 1868 and 1869, was designed by Alfred Waterhouse. The building is constructed of common brick, featuring red brick and stone dressings, with blue brick bands and a tiled roof adorned with cresting. It is two storeys high with an attic and consists of six bays in an irregular arrangement. The first bay projects under a gable, while the third bay is recessed and has a two-storey gabled projection. The fourth and fifth bays also feature gables, and the sixth bay is a single storey. Notable architectural details include a first-floor sill course, a top Lombard frieze, and cogged friezes on the gables. Most windows are segmented-headed and paired, with the first bay showcasing a pointed window that has a heavy corbelled and gabled hood above. The third bay contains a three-light pointed and traceried stair window. The second bay features a dormer with a tile-hung gable and a canopy arch of two orders. The entrance is segmental-headed, with a heavy door that includes diamond lights. There are two cross-axial stacks. Inside, the building has a dog-leg stair with arcaded screens and iron balusters. The west side of the structure is symmetrical, characterized by end gabled wings and stone-mullioned windows with pointed lights. The house is now part of the hospital complex.
