Description

Pendower Teacher's Centre is a large house built around 1870 for J.W. Pease, a banker. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and has a Welsh slate roof. The building has two storeys and attics, featuring four wide irregular bays. The left bay is gabled with a semi-circular bow, while the third bay also projects with a semi-circular bow. There is a projecting ground-floor canted bay on the left side. Most windows are four-paned sashes, with two in the left two bays. In the right bays, there are stone mullioned-and-transomed windows, with the ground-floor windows being of double height. The second bay has two gabled dormers, and the upper windows in the left bays have enriched pediments. The main gable is adorned with flanking ball finials.

To the right of the bow, there is an extruded first-floor dressing room that rests on a square buttress and an angel corbel, and the left return is styled similarly. A deep port-cochere is located on the right return. Steps lead up to a double panelled door, which features a fanlight and sidelights set within a multi-moulded arch. The building has a large rear domestic wing and irregularly placed corniced pilastered stacks.

Inside, the property showcases four stone arches leading to corridors and the entrance, a marble entrance floor, and high-quality Jacobean-style panelling in the former dining room, complete with pendants on the panelled ceiling. The staircase is in a 17th-century style, featuring a wide grip handrail and fat turned balusters. There are marble chimney pieces, some of which are painted over, including one with Wedgwood plaques and some with tiled surrounds. A stone chimney piece with marble inlay is set in an arcaded Jacobean surround in the panelled room. The rear wing contains early 18th-century-style chimney pieces. The former billiard room retains four high-quality glass panels, an original fitted bench, and a Jacobean-style cast iron fire dog.
