Description

No. 9 Finkle Street is a 17th-century building in good condition, standing 2 and a half storeys tall with four windows. The exterior is made of roughly squared and dressed stone, featuring a brick modillion band above the ground floor and brick flat arches over flush framed glazing bar sash windows. There are toothed bands above the first floor and below the eaves, with three blind brick oculi and a small round window in the space between these bands. The roof is covered with pantiles, and there is a raised verge to the left with remnants of a kneeler, along with two fine brick chimneys.

On the ground floor, there is a late 19th or early 20th-century square bay shop window with glazing bars and a moulded cornice in the center. To the right is a doorway leading to the shop, while a plain doorway with a wooden lintel has been inserted to the left. There is also a through passage door on the far left, which is in a brick-blocked opening that originally held a slightly cambered sash window. A yard is located at the rear, which also features a 2 and a half storey brick extension.

Inside, some panelling can be seen beside the ground floor chimney, and there is a good 18th-century ramped staircase. The main interest lies in the attic, which contains three upper or middle crucks in the room over the rear extension, with collar beams supporting the purlins, and two crucks in the front garret with brackets to the collars. The chimney stack is swept back in corbelled courses from a position between the first and second windows from the left to a position on the right of the raised verge.
