Description
The Imperial Chemical Industries Estate Workshops, built around 1854, originally served as a school and is now used as an estate workshop and store. The building is constructed of white "Pease" brick with stone dressings, while the right return and rear are made of red brick. It features Welsh slate roofs and is designed in the Tudor-Gothick style.
The structure is one storey high with a one-bay gabled front, which is accessed from the left return. A tall pointed window with quasi-reticulated tracery is located under a hoodmould. The gable has sloped copings with roll moulding and retains the remains of a bellcote at the apex. Octagonal turrets with spirelets and ornate finials are positioned at the corners, although the left spirelet is missing.
Flanking the gable are high screen walls that end in similar buttressed turrets, featuring basket-headed carriage openings. The right opening has boarded double doors beneath hoodmoulds. The copings on these walls are raised in the middle to form gablets with fleur-de-lys finials on octagonal shafts.
The left return has four bays and includes a lean-to porch in the second bay, which contains a six-panel door. The cross windows feature cavetto-moulded wood mullions and transoms, along with hoodmoulds and battered sills. The straight parapet has battered, roll-moulded copings and two raised stepped sections adorned with tablets and carved ribbons. Inside, the building has six-panel doors in moulded surrounds and kingpost roof trusses with butt purlins.
