Description
These are two farm buildings, a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century and raised in the 18th century (number 1), and a late 18th century farm cottage (number 2). They are located on the south side of Low Stanghow Road in Lockwood.
The farmhouse is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble, with dressed sandstone used on the cottage and the raised first floor of the farmhouse. It has a clay pantile roof with stone gable coping and a block kneeler at the right end. The farmhouse has two windows on its front elevation. A doorway is situated to the left, currently holding a mid-20th century door under a keyed lintel. There is a rubble plinth and mid-20th century casement windows in original openings, each with a keyed lintel and painted stone sills. A blocked early/mid 19th century doorway is visible to the right. A rebuilt ridge stack is present. A contemporary single-storey outhouse, a pent, adjoins the right return.
Number 2, adjoining the farmhouse to the left, has one window and a blocked doorway to the right, with a later entrance now provided from the rear. It also features mid-20th century casement windows in original openings, with keyed lintels and painted stone sills. A rebuilt stack is located to the left. Later lean-to extensions to the rear, and an institutional building adjoining the left end, are not considered to be of heritage significance.
