Description

The Church of St Aidan is a church built between 1899 and 1900 by architect W.S. Hicks. It is constructed from snecked, rockfaced sandstone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, and features Gaelic clay tiled roofs. The church is designed in the Norman revival style and has a cruciform plan, which includes a north vestry and a west porch.

The exterior is characterized by clasping buttresses and a gabled porch that contains a round-headed west doorway, which is adorned with a billet-moulded hoodmould and imposts that continue as string courses. The porch also features two boarded doors set in Caernarvon-arched openings beneath an enriched tympanum. The nave has four bays with tall, chamfered, round-headed lancets that include leaded lights and hoodmoulds, along with a string course below the sills. There are two windows in the transepts and a south doorway located in the south transept. The paired west window is recessed behind a single round-headed arch with imposts. A bellcote with a cross finial and one bell is situated on the west gable of the nave. The slightly lower three-bay chancel has a two-tier tripartite east window.

Inside, the church features two-bay transept arcades supported by octagonal piers and square responds, with barrel roofs in both the nave and chancel. The east window contains stained glass dating from around 1903 to 1905. Additionally, there is a square stone font bowl with continuous guilloche moulding on the sides, set on a circular pedestal with a moulded base and a square plinth that has waterleaf carvings at the angles.
