Description
Rawcliffe House, also known as The Bungalow, is a building located on Boosbeck Road in Skelton Green. It was constructed in 1883 as a miner's hospital and is now divided into two houses. The structure is made of rendered brick, with mid-20th century interlocking clay tiles on the left and rear wings, and late 20th century concrete tiles on the right.
The building is two storeys high and features three bays on the entrance front, which faces southeast. The central gabled bay projects forward and includes a six-panelled door with an overlight. It has segment-headed sash windows with painted wedge lintels and battered sills, which are also found in the returns of the central bay. An ironstone tablet in the gable of the central bay is inscribed with "Miners Accident Hospital 1883."
All gables have carved barge boards, and the end stacks have paired external flues. The single-storey rear wings have similar windows and a tall stack. A mid-20th century timber and plastic porch at the entrance front is noted as not being of interest. This building is included for its historic significance as a rare example of an industrial-welfare planned structure.
