Description
Handale Abbey Cottages are a pair of cottages that were originally a farmhouse and farm cottage, dating from the early to mid-18th century. They are located on South Town Lane in Loftus and have outhouses added to the left and right ends around 1800. The cottages are constructed from dressed sandstone and coursed rubble, with quoins on the left outhouse and a brick outhouse on the right. The roofs are covered with clay pantiles and feature stone ridges, gable copings, and block kneelers. The brick stacks have been rebuilt and topped with stone caps.
The buildings are two storeys high, with a total of four windows across the front. The original doorway between the farmhouse and cottage now contains a late 20th-century door. There is also a mid to late 19th-century doorway with a late 20th-century door between the bays of the farmhouse. The original openings have late 20th-century casements, and there is a late 19th-century opening with a sash window inserted above the original doorway. The first floor of the farmhouse features stone sills and keyed lintels. The roof is steeply pitched with sprocketed eaves, and there are ridge and end stacks. The single-storey outhouses have garret lights in the returns of both the farmhouse and cottage.
A mid-20th-century lean-to rear wing and a brick outbuilding from around 1900, which adjoins the right-hand outhouse, are not considered of special interest. The farm outbuildings to the south have been altered too much to be of special interest.
