Description

The Cornhill-on-Tweed War Memorial is located on the verge at the western end of Main Street, directly across from The Collingwood Arms, which is also a listed building. This memorial features a tall Celtic cross made of granite. The front face of the wheel head displays a voided cross that is carved in low relief and polished, creating a contrast with the rough-hewn surfaces of the stone.

On the front face of the cross shaft, there is a raised and polished panel inscribed with the words "IN GLORIOUS MEMORY OF" followed by the names of 13 individuals from the parish. The cross shaft is supported by a tapering rectangular plinth, which also has a raised and polished panel. The main dedicatory inscription on this panel reads: "THESE FELL IN THE GREAT EUROPEAN WAR 1914 – 1918 'SONS OF THIS PLACE LET THIS OF YOU BE SAID THAT YOU WHO LIVE ARE WORTHY OF YOUR DEAD THESE GAVE THEIR LIVES THAT YOU WHO LIVE MAY REAP A RICHER HARVEST ERE YOU FALL ASLEEP.'"

On the left face of the plinth, there is a similar panel that lists four names and states: "THESE FELL IN THE GREAT WORLD WAR 1939-1945 WE THINK OF THEM IN THE MORNING AND REMEMBER THEM ON THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN." The plinth is set on a low stone step.

The memorial is situated on a small square pavement and is enclosed on three sides by a chain supported by four low bollards.
