Description
The Pewsey War Memorial Cross is a tall stone memorial located in the churchyard to the north-west of the Church of St John the Baptist, which is listed as Grade I. It is also near several other Grade II listed churchyard monuments. The memorial features a wheel-head cross mounted on a large rough-hewn plinth, which sits on a square base. A sword is carved in relief on the front face of the cross.
The main inscription is incised in a recessed panel on the front face of the plinth and reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 (33 NAMES) 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.'"
Additionally, a further recessed panel has been added to the rear face of the plinth to honor those who lost their lives in the Second World War, with the inscription reading: "1939-45 (23 NAMES)."
At the foot of the plinth on the south-east side, a small rectangular stone tablet commemorates one member of the parish who died while serving in Northern Ireland.
