Description

The Court House is a house and flat located on Church Street in Pewsey. It dates from the late 16th century to the 19th century and features a timber frame with roughcast infilling on a brick and flint base. The west facade is constructed of brick with stone dressings and is topped with a thatched roof. The building has two storeys and attics, with two bays facing the street and an additional three bays added individually, stepping down the hill. The last bay is a single storey with an attic that forms the flat. The framing consists of three panels high with wavy corner braces, and there is decorative framing on the gable of the fourth bay, which also features carved barge boards. A blocked three-light ovolo moulded window is present. The entrance to the hall is located in the second bay from the right, accessed through a 19th-century timber and thatched porch.

An 18th-century facade has been added to the return wing, which is two storeys with an attic and consists of five bays with diaper brickwork. The ground floor features a central glazed door flanked by large square bays from the 19th century, with hipped slate roofs that create a porch. On the first floor, there is a large canted oriel window with 12-pane sashes, while the other windows are 16-pane sashes. Two recessed dormers are present in the attics, and there are gable stacks. At the rear, there is a hipped slated two-storey extension from the 19th century in the re-entrant angle.

Inside, the original building comprised a hall and parlour, with the first added bay on the left serving as a kitchen added in the 17th century, which includes a stack backing onto the hall stack and forms a bacon cupboard. The original hall likely had a smoke bay.
