Description
The Church of St Helen is a parish church built in 1840 by Ignatius Bonomi, incorporating masonry from a church constructed in 1751. It was altered and had a chancel added in 1866. The nave is made of random rubble, while the chancel features snecked stone, and the roof is covered with Welsh slate.
The church consists of a nave, chancel, and a north porch. The four-bay nave has paired lancets with trefoiled windows above, and the west bay features two tiers of paired cusped windows. The west end has a projection with offsets that rise to a gabled bellcote, which includes a window with a shouldered lintel. On either side of the projection are groups of three lancets, with the central lancet being blank. The one-bay chancel has a three-light Geometric window on the east side. The gabled porch on the north side has a door with a shouldered lintel.
Inside, there is a west gallery from 1840 supported by two Tuscan columns, featuring a modillion cornice and a pulvinated frieze. The parapet displays a mid-18th century carving of the Collingwood arms within a frame of open-work Rococo mantling, along with a moulded and ramped top rail. There are also two large Collingwood hatchments from the early 19th century. The pulpit and reading desk, likely from 1840, feature arched panels, waterleaf columns at the corners, and brass candleholders.
