Description

The Carham War Memorial is a First World War memorial with additions for the Second World War, constructed from granite and red sandstone with bronze decoration. It features a 4 metre tall Latin cross, which has a bronze wreath in relief at the crossing. The cross shaft tapers slightly and is set on two sloping plinths that rest on a stepped base. The main inscription on the front of the plinth reads "CARHAM PARISH/IN MEMORY OF THOSE/WHO FELL/IN THE GREAT WAR/1914-1918/'LET IT BE TOLD AT SPARTA THAT WE REMAIN AT OUR POSTS'". The names of 17 fallen soldiers are recorded on the right and left faces of the plinth, while the inscription on the rear notes "1939-1945/(NAMES)".

This memorial was erected through public subscription and unveiled on 19th September 1920 by Earl Grey, who remarked that its plain form reflected the Border character. The inscription is attributed to Simonides, with a variation of the original text from Herodotus. The names of those who died in the Second World War were added later. War memorials hold significant historical and cultural value both locally and nationally, and this memorial is a notable example of a First World War tribute, demonstrating clear historic interest.
