Description
The building is a barn and adjoining shelter shed located to the east of West Wharmley Farmhouse, dating from the 16th century or early 17th century, and has been altered over time. It was originally a dwelling of bastle-house type. The structure is built of massive rubble with a stone slate roof and consists of two storeys.
On the ground floor, there are three windows that are part-glazed and part-slatted, with the second window inserted into an earlier door that has a chamfered surround. The first floor features a small slit window and a blocked original door with chamfered jambs. The east range of the house adjoins the left end of the wall, while the right gable has a ground floor door. The left gable contains an 18th-century door in an earlier opening, which is a boarded door with a chamfered surround, and a small original window on the first floor.
The rear elevation has various openings from the 18th and 19th centuries, including a first-floor door at the head of an external stone stair that leads to the shelter shed. Inside the shelter shed, an original ground floor slit window is visible. The shelter shed itself is made of rubble with stone dressings and a stone slate roof, featuring two segmental arches in the front wall.
