Description

This building began as a Mechanic's Institute in 1854 and was later used as a Women's Institute. It was enlarged in 1890. The building is constructed from tooled squared stone with tooled and margined raised quoins, and has a slate roof with coped gables, kneelers, and stepped, corniced stacks in tooled and margined ashlar.

It is a two-storey, four-bay structure with a pitched roof. The three ground-floor windows are framed with raised stone surrounds and broad chamfers. A six-panelled door sits within a similar surround to the right of the windows. The three first-floor windows are similarly treated, with a smaller round-headed stair window situated to the right. Inscribed stone panels between the ground and first floor windows read 'The Women's' and 'Institute', flanking a framed tablet which states: 'ESTABLISHED 1848 ERECTED BY SUBSCRIPTION 1854 AND ENLARGED BY GEORGE J COOKSON 1890'. The building is listed for its historical interest.
