Description
The Newbrough War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920 by Messrs Beattie & Co of Carlisle, with additions for the Second World War. It features an Aberdeen granite cross on a local Prudham freestone base, along with copper and bronze plaques.
Located on the north side of the main road through the small village, adjacent to the town hall, the memorial takes the form of a Celtic cross set on a tapering pedestal, which rests on a two-stepped base. On the front of the main pedestal, there is a tapering copper plaque measuring 90 cm by 60 cm, adorned with a decorative arched pattern at the top. This plaque displays the dates "1914" and "1918," along with the thirty names of the fallen, each in its own cartouche, with the lettering and cartouches in raised Roman capitals. Additionally, a bronze plaque measuring 15 cm by 92 cm is affixed to the front of the upper step, providing information from 1939-1945, with ten names raised in half relief in Roman capitals, and the dates presented on a central panel. The memorial is set within a later curving structure of walls, steps, and seats.
