Description

This is a former inn, now used as houses, dating from the 17th century, with significant alterations and extensions in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is constructed of stone with slate roofs and has ashlar stepped and corniced gable stacks. The front elevation is composed of three blocks of varying height. The left block is of rubble construction, two storeys high with two windows, and includes a lower extension to the left, all with replaced windows. The central block is taller and built of squared stone; on the ground floor are traces of a blocked central door, flanked by replaced sash windows with tooled lintels. The first floor has 12-pane sashes flanking a blocked window, all with tooled lintels. The right block, dating to the 17th century, is of rubble construction with heavy quoins. It has a ground floor glazed door in a chamfered surround, a late 19th-century sash window, and on the first floor 12- and 16-pane sashes, which originally were 2- and 3-light mullioned windows. The right return of the 17th-century block features a small attic casement. An 18th-century rear wing has a ground floor door and casement in chamfered surrounds with a blocked door between them. The first floor has a casement and a Yorkshire sash, which formerly were 2- and 3-light mullioned windows. The rear elevation features a gable with an ashlar stack and a small attic window in a chamfered surround, along with a later outshut. The Stable House, formerly a rear wing of the central block, has been altered and is not considered of particular interest. The interior of the central block contains an 18th-century fireplace and a late 18th-century staircase with a moulded handrail.
