Description
West Wharmley Farmhouse is a house with an east wing that dates from the 16th or early 17th century and was altered in the 19th century. The main block is believed to have been built around 1835, while the west wing is from the 18th century and also underwent 19th-century alterations. The main block features a front made of tooled ashlar and a rendered rear with raised quoins and dressings, topped with a slate roof that has coped gables and stepped stone stacks. The east wing is constructed of rubble with long quoins and later tooled dressings, featuring a hipped slate roof and a stepped ashlar ridge stack. The west wing is also made of rubble with cut quoins and dressings, and it has a slate roof with a stone stack.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and has three windows arranged symmetrically. It has a plinth and a central projecting porch with a band and a coped parapet. The entrance features a top-glazed six-panel door, and the windows are late 19th-century sashes with projecting stone sills. The left wing has various late 19th-century and 20th-century openings, while the right wing contains one 19th-century ground floor window and several blocked openings, including remnants of a 17th-century mullioned window.
On the rear elevation, there is a large round-headed stair window with intersecting glazing bars above a small circular window, along with one 16-pane sash and other altered windows. The wings also feature late 19th-century openings.
