Description

The potting shed, which was formerly a furnace house for a heated garden and greenhouses, dates from the late 18th century and was altered around 1840. It is constructed of ashlar and has a Welsh slate roof. The building is long and rectangular, built into a hillside, featuring a tall south wall and a pent roof. The flat-coped south wall is now within a 20th-century greenhouse and has no openings. Each side of the building has a 2-light mullioned window with iron-framed 18-pane casements and stepped slab coping. The low wall at the rear includes pilasters and stepped coping. There is an attached terrace wall with a flight of steps at each end, and a second flight at the left end leads down to a sunken ramp entry to the furnace house. Inside, there are four round-arched furnaces in the north wall.
