Potting-Sheds, Walled Garden, Stevenson House

WALLED GARDEN: probably 18th century in origin, altered, quadrangular. Wall averaging about 12 ft (4 m) high, mostly random rubble, some coursed, brick interior to N side, cope predominantly of sandstone ashlar. Large lean-to shed block against exterior of N wall, early 19th century?, symmetrical, in rubble of sandstone and conglomerate (clinkstone), plain boarded door to each end, 2 small plate glass windows to N, central section raised to accommodate garage/cartshed door, pantiled. Lean-to greenhouse, later 19th century, against interior of N wall, glazing on timber frame on brick base. E wall partly incorporated into redeveloped steading with modern glazing and conservatory, also into Trust Cottage with picture window.

TRUST COTTAGE: 1856, modernised 1960s. Symmetrical, 3-bay, gabled, traditional cottage in snecked rubble, margins broached and droved, projecting cills. To front (N) elevation, central 4-panelled door flanked by 2 windows. To rear (S) elevation, central small window flanked symmetrically by 2 larger ones. Short, flat-roofed link to Walled Garden incorporates 4-panelled door to S, small window (modern glazing) to N, large picture window to W in Walled Garden. Main cottage windows all timber sash and case, 12-pane, replaced with horns. Roof in red pantiles, ashlar skews and 2 gable stacks, cavetto copes, cans absent.

GARDENER?S COTTAGE: circa 1860, single storey. 3-bay, in squared and snecked brown and grey sandstone, margins stugged and droved. Front (S) elevation symmetrical central door 4-panelled with "letterbox" fanlight, flanked by 2 windows. Quadripartite bow projects to W elevation, 2 windows to plain E elevation. Rear (N) elevation includes 2-bay projection to W, window and rear door to E with modern timber porch. Fenestration in timber sash and case, principally 8-paned in lying panes. Roof piended, in graded grey Scotch slate, projecting eaves, single central ashlar stack with projecting cope, 4 cans included 1 surviving decorative original.
