Description
Sandy's Mill is a mid to late 18th century, three-storey meal mill with a roughly rectangular plan, featuring a later single-storey threshing mill attached to the west. The building is constructed of random rubble with dressed stone detailing.
On the northeast elevation, there is an entrance at ground floor level, with an additional doorway on the first floor above it. A window is located on the second floor, and to the right, there is a kiln with a small opening centered below the eaves.
The southeast elevation is notable for its low breastshot waterwheel, which measures 426 cm in outside diameter and 150 cm in width. Originally, it had 30 wooden paddles, each 3 cm thick. Windows are present on both the first and second floors. The west side features a gabled two-storey single bay and a single-storey threshing mill with a piend roof.
The mill, threshing mill, and the steep truncated pyramidal roof of the kiln, which is missing its ventilator, are all covered with red pantiles.
Inside, much of the machinery is still intact. The waterwheel powered two pairs of millstones: one for grinding and the other for shelling. Additional equipment includes a grain bruiser, a pearl barley wheel, and various gearing. The sack hoist is particularly interesting as it can be operated from any floor and includes a dog clutch with both automatic and manual disengaging devices.
The kiln floor is situated 30 cm below the second floor of the mill and is made of cast-iron perforated plates. There is a single bagging outlet from the kiln floor to the mill, and access to the kiln firebox is external, with the internal route blocked.
