Description
The Fan House, located to the west of Shaft No. 2 at Ashington Woodhorn Colliery, was built in 1900, as indicated by the date above the west door. It is constructed from yellow Ashington brick and features gauged arches over the doors and windows. The building has a Welsh slate roof with concrete capping on the fan chambers.
This single-storey structure includes a square ventilation tower at the east end, which is flanked by fan chambers on the east and south sides. The north elevation consists of three bays, which are defined by pilasters that rise to a stepped-and-cogged eaves cornice. The arched windows in the end bays have radial heads and metal-framed casements. To the left, there is a flat-topped tower with a stepped-and-cogged frieze, and to the far left, a fan chamber with a small boarded door. The right return features a half-glazed door set under a round arch. The rear elevation displays similar window arrangements and a fan chamber with a curved roof adjoining the tower.
The Capel fan is still in working order.
