Description

The Eastern Winding House and Shaft Head Building, also known as Winder and Shaft No. 1, is a winding house and shaft head gear built around 1894, with some later alterations. It is constructed from yellow Ashington brick, featuring gauged arches over the doors and windows. The roof is covered with late 20th-century synthetic sheeting, while the shaft head gear is made of cast iron and has a brick casing that has been heightened with red brick.

The building is a rectangular, three-storey structure with the shaft located to the south. The side walls have three bays and the rear has two bays, with the bays defined by pilasters that rise to a stepped-and-cogged eaves cornice. Large round-arched windows hold metal-framed casements, and the central window on the east side has been replaced by late 20th-century double doors that open onto a platform. The lower floors feature round-arched doorways and windows, along with an arched doorway that leads from the upper floor to a walkway to the cage. The roof is hipped, with a flat-topped dormer and a half dormer for winding cables, as well as a raised louvre on the ridge.

The shaft head gear has a skeletal frame that is partly encased in a rectangular structure, which includes four round-arched openings on the east side. The sinking of the shaft began in 1894, and the first coal was produced on February 13, 1901. A steam engine was replaced by an electric winder in 1975. The superstructure of the shaft head building and the lower flat-roofed additions to the west and south are not considered to be of special interest.
