Walled Garden 450 Metres South East Of The Hall

The walled garden located 450 metres southeast of Newton Hall dates from the late 18th century and was altered in the late 19th century. It is constructed of brick in stretcher bond, featuring stone dressings and a squared stone external face, forming an irregular quadrangle. The tall walls have flat slab coping.

The main entrance is situated near the north end of the west wall, featuring a re-set lintel from 1771 on the exterior and an internal carved timber lintel dated MCM, supported by carved corbels with the initials SFW and CW. Above this is an older slab displaying the Widdrington crest, positioned beneath a raised and stepped section of the wall topped with a moulded finial.

Near the north end of the east wall, there is a large circular doorway leading to a rebuilt timber summerhouse. The lower section of the south wall includes a central gateway flanked by pyramid-capped piers made of tooled-and-margined ashlar. To the east of this gate, set into the external face, is a sundial from 1757 encased in a dentil brick surround, alongside a lionmask fountain within a pedimented surround, topped with coping that steps up to an acorn finial.

An L-shaped extension of the east wall extends beyond the southeast corner and features a boarded door within an alternating-block surround, with the Widdrington arms above and a blocking course topped with an acorn finial. The external face of the north wall displays blocked ducts and furnace arches, and there are four shaped ceramic chimneypots atop the wall. The western part of the south wall, which includes attached ruinous greenhouses and outbuildings, is not of interest.
