Description
A late 19th-century gate screen and ha-ha wall, likely designed by S.F. Widdrington, stands to the south of Newton Hall. The screen is constructed of squared stone with cut dressings. Two monolith gate piers feature swell friezes and moulded caps, surmounted by urn finials with tall, swept tops. Short, flat-coped walls connect the end piers, each topped with low, pyramidal caps. A ha-ha wall, characterized by its pitched coping, extends to the rear of the right-hand gate pier and runs northwards to connect with the west end of a balustrade. Contemporary wooden fencing and a gate are not considered to be of particular architectural interest. The screen and ha-ha are included on the list for their contribution to the group value of the wider estate.
