Description
A pair of stone lions, of uncertain date, are located southwest of Newton Hall in Newton-on-the-Moor. They were moved to their current position in the late 19th century and stand in an upright sitting position, approximately 1.2 meters high. The lions may have oriental origins and are included for their group value.
An interesting historical note mentions a marble tablet dedicated to Samuel Edward Widdrington, who died in 1856, located in Shilbottle Church. The inscription states that "this stone formed part of the Court of Lions in the Moorish palace of the Alhambra, (Granada, Spain) whence it was brought in 1829," suggesting a provenance for the stone lions.
