Description
The garden wall, summerhouse, and balustrade located to the south of Newton Hall date from the late 19th century and are likely the work of S.F. Widdrington. The wall and summerhouse are constructed from tooled-and-margined stone, with the east wall being rock-faced at the rear. The structure features ashlar dressings and a balustrade. The summerhouse is topped with a Lakeland slate roof and a copper finial.
A short north wall connects to the south-east corner of the Hall's conservatory and includes one boarded door, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course. At the north-east corner, there is a square pier topped with a ball finial. The lower east wall has moulded coping and small panelled piers. Near the south end, the summerhouse features a moulded plinth and a flattened elliptical arch adorned with coloured marble paterae; the central sections of the arch and the moulded eaves cornice are made of timber. The summerhouse has a swept pyramidal roof with an ornate scrolly finial, and its interior is lined with 17th-century panelling believed to be from Shilbottle church, which was rebuilt in 1884. There is also a small round window on the right return.
The arched balustrade on the south side of the garden consists of panelled piers that support gadrooned vases, with taller vases flanking the steps that lead down to a lower level of the garden.
