Description
The pant located on the east side of the road junction in Newton-on-the-Moor is dated 1914. It is constructed from squared stone with cut dressings and features bronze and iron fittings, topped with a Lakeland slate roof. The structure has a low platform that includes a stone trough with an iron bucket rest. The back wall is adorned with a lion mask spout, a gadrooned knob, and flat coping that steps up over a plaque inscribed with the following: 'ERECTED/BY THE TENANTS OF NEWTON ON THE MOOR/ TO COMMEMORATE/THE GOLDEN WEDDING OF/S FITZHERBERT & CECILIA WIDDRINGTON/20TH APRIL 1864-1914'. Flanking piers support a timber superstructure with a swept hipped roof, although the leaded eaves flashing has been recently removed by vandals. The structure also features short wing walls leading to monolith square end piers with stepped caps that support the swept bases of missing finials.
