Description

This is a bungalow built in 1936 by M.P. Reavell for the Fountains Abbey Settlers Society. It is constructed of brick, rendered and colourwashed cream, with a flat felted roof. The design is L-shaped, single-story and three bays wide.

The front elevation features a plinth and a central bay with two steps leading to a four-panel door, the top panel glazed, alongside a window. A smaller window is located in the right bay, while the left bay projects forward with a window near the left end. Overhanging eaves and stacks are a feature of the flat roof. The left return displays a projecting chimney breast with tiled offsets and windows to both sides. The right return has a boarded door and a window to the right. The rear elevation shows a large living room window in the centre bay, along with a smaller window to the right and windows positioned close to the ends of the end bays. All windows are iron-framed casements with horizontal bars and red tile sills.

This bungalow is the sole remaining, unaltered example of the smallest of the four settler’s house types and represents a notable example of modern movement design on a small scale in Northern England.
